The Sitges Film Festival is set to become the first movie festival to accept cryptocurrency as ticket payments. The adoption is the result of a recently cemented partnership with the Slate Entertainment Group (SEG), which announced the development of its own blockchain VOD platform and ticketing platform earlier this month.
Slatix, the blockchain-based ticketing platform, aims to provide “forgery-resistant event tickets at near-zero fees”, Screen Daily reports. Additionally, the app has features such as content discovery via ratings and reviews. Regular users and reviewers can earn points that will be converted into perks such as discounts for entertainment – movies, concerts, plays, and spectator sports.
The Sitges Film Festival is a Spanish film festival that is renowned for its horror and fantasy movies. The festival was started in 1968 and has since then been held annually in Sitges, near Barcelona.
In a statement, Sitges Deputy Director Mike Hostench expressed the festival organizer’s enthusiasm about the deal.
“We are tremendously excited to enter the blockchain space at its inception. We have always been known as a film festival that is a leader in technology and in the genre film space including VR, and feel this development is consistent with that tradition. As a festival our responsibility is to support independent filmmakers and we are truly excited to work with the Slate Entertainment Group, who like us, believe in fairness and transparency for content creators and producers.”
This year’s festival is going to be held from October 5 to October 14.
